Review of the Black & Decker DCM18S Brew 'n Go Personal Coffeemaker
(Spokane, Washington, USA)
My husband and I are avid campers and go to the mountains whenever possible. But, despite our great love for roughing it and being one with nature, we love having our coffee in the mornings just as much, mine decaffeinated, his not. And, as any camper will tell you, the less gear you have to take along the better, which prompted us to search for a travel coffee maker that wouldn't take up much space but still brew good tasting java.
The Black & Decker Brew 'n Go personal coffee maker came recommended highly by a close friend so we decided to buy not one but two so we'd each have our own thanks to our different coffee preferences.
The first thing I instantly liked about it was how hot the coffee was and how smooth it tasted. The mug is full in less than three minutes and because of the permanent filter, there's no need to ever buy any paper filters. The small size, approximately 9 and 3/4 inches high by 7 inches wide and 6 inches deep, fit perfect with the rest of our camping gear, even with two to pack.
This personal coffee maker brews hot coffee directly into a 15 ounce, stainless steel travel mug, or if you prefer, when back at home you can use any cup or mug you like. However, the mug the machine comes with keeps the coffee hot for quite a while, and, unlike others I have used, has a lid that seals completely.
Another thing I love about the travel mug is that I can use it for heating up water for making soup and oatmeal for meals or for other beverages like hot chocolate or tea when not at home.
My only complaint about this travel mug coffee maker is that the water level mark is difficult to see, but other than that, the Black & Decker Brew 'n Go coffee maker has performed well and we continue to use it both at home and on the go.Editor's note
The Black & Decker Brew 'n Go is the most popular travel coffee maker around. It is a very simple coffee maker that makes one cup of coffee directly into the travel mug that comes with it. It uses a permanent filter which does give a somewhat richer taste to the coffee.
Overall, this product has very good customer reviews. However, there are some complaints that seem to come up repeatedly in the reviews. Probably the most worrying issue is that several users reported that their coffee maker seems to turn itself on at random times! So it's best to keep it unplugged when not making coffee.
Some people also find the coffee not hot enough and others complain about coffee grounds getting splattered in various places inside the coffee maker and also finding their way into the cup of coffee.
Having said all this, most owners are very happy with their Black & Decker Brew 'n Go coffee maker.
